The Centro Hospitalar de Setúbal (CHS) was created following the publication in the Diário da República of Decree-Law No. 233/2005, of 29 December, and results from the merger of the Hospital de São Bernardo (HSB) with the Hospital Ortopédico Sant'Iago do Outão (HOSO).
It is a collective entity of a corporate nature, governed by public law and endowed with administrative, financial and patrimonial autonomy. The applicable legal regime is that of corporate public entities and respective statutes, acting in accordance with the normative framework of the National Health Service (SNS) and under the terms established in the Internal Regulations of the institution.
The CHS's mission is "the promotion of health to all citizens within the scope of the responsibilities and capabilities of the hospitals that compose it, providing specialized health care, with respect for the dignity of patients, and encouraging the professional development of its collaborators, within a framework quality, efficiency and organizational effectiveness
The CHS is organized along departmental lines (Surgery, Medicine, Anesthesiology, Women and Children, Psychiatry and Mental Health, Locomotor System and Complementary Diagnostic and Therapeutic Means), which are supported by the Support Services for Medical Action and General Support and Logistics.
The healthcare activity carried out by this hospital unit is complementary to the other hospital units located on the Peninsula Setúbal - the Garcia de Orta Hospital and the Barreiro Montijo Hospital Centre - and, in terms of primary healthcare, in coordination with the Arrábida Group of Health Centres.
In terms of area of influence, the CHS constitutes the hospital reference for:
- The Litoral Alentejano Local Health Unit (covering the municipalities of Alcácer do Sal, Grândola, Santiago do Cacém, Sines and Odemira) within the scope of the specialties of Cardiology, Infectiology, Neurology, Obstetrics, Psychiatry and Mental Health;
- The Barreiro Montijo Hospital Center and the Arco Ribeirinho Health Centers Group, in the field of Cardiology, Hemodynamics and Nephrology;
- Arco Ribeirinho and Almada-Seixal Health Centre Groups, in terms of specialties in Stomatology and Immuno-allergology.
